Multimedia & Communication Technology

Research at EDM focusses both on the transition of 'traditional' multimedia applications to a networked environment and the development of novel applications that employ state-of-the art networking technology. The research area 'multimedia and internet technology' focusses on two domains: Networked Virtual Environments and Multimedia learning environments.

Research activities

  • Networked Virtual Environments

The EDM research within multimedia, communication and internet technology is mainly situated in the context of networked virtual environments (NVEs) and virtual interactive communities (VICs). The goal of this research is to enable a multitude of people to interact with each other and the virtual surroundings in a graphical environment using the internet and broadband networks. Our research focuses on a number of underlying technologies used in NVEs and VICs.

  • Multimedia Learning Environments

New portable devices such as PDA's, new standards in telematics such as GPRS, I-mode, UMTS, wireless communications etc... are among the most important research topics to follow. Some of them are already being used in a number of new projects. Research in multimedia environments for blended learning applications has resulted in the creation of a Learning Management System (LMS) that is commercialized through a partner.
