Research ActivitiesOver the past 10 years EDM has become a major research institute of Hasselt University. The research of EDM is concentrated in three domains: Computer Graphics, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Multimedia & Communication Technology (MCT). The computer graphics research already started in 1987, focussing on modelling, rendering, animation and virtual environments. Over the past years this research has gradually broadened towards multimedia and internet technology and since 2000 a human-computer interaction group was created, primarily built upon HCI-research in virtual environments. Research spectreThe concentration strategy has offered stability on the one hand, while facilitating expansion on the other hand. It enabled EDM to develop the complete research spectre, ranging from fundamental research over basic and applied research to contract R&D. It also strengthens the complementarity of our research and offers many advantages (different perspectives in research, cross fertilization, project funding, valorization, ...). Know-how transferIn setting up new research (projects), EDM always has eye for possible future applications and the relevance to society. This approach allowed us to establish a successfull collaboration with industry and government through contract R&D projects. This know how transfer in its turn enabled a further expansion of EDM. |
